Hey, dads, remember the excitement and anticipation that built during those final never-ending days of school leading up to summer vacation? Better yet, remember waking up on that very first day of summer vacation with the sun shining and three whole months ahead of you to play? Well, we all know that summer vacation disappears when we grow up and have to face the responsibilities of being an adult. But, even though you can’t turn back time and be a kid enjoying a free summer you most certainly can enjoy some much-needed play time with your kids and share your favorite interests with them.
Summer is a time when kids sign up for every activity under the sun, from playing sports like baseball, tennis or swimming to exploring interests such as astronomy, science or computer camp. Now is the perfect time to volunteer to be a coach and share your talents and interests with your children and other kids in your community. If you played baseball or soccer as a kid, sign up to coach or, if your schedule won’t allow a time commitment like that you can always volunteer to help run practices when you’re available. Or, see if you can help out from time to time at a summer camp with an activity you love. Any skill you have can be put to use and if it’s an interest that you share with your kids, even better. This will be some great quality time spent with your children, and it may not be a whole, long summer full of freedom, but spending some afternoons or evenings on the baseball field could sure make you feel like a kid again.
